The IZOD story begins across the pond in London, where talented tailor, Arthur James “Jack” Izod, opens the first A.J. IZOD store in London’s West End in 1922, selling fine shirts, ties, hosiery and sportswear. In 1930, Edward, The Prince of Wales, is so impressed with Jack’s apparel, he commissions him to make shirts for the royal household. While in London, an executive from David Crystal, Inc. became intrigued by the IZOD name and purchased the rights to it. The IZOD brand was launched by David Crystal, Inc. in the United States in 1937.

In the US, a successful line of women’s shirts was launched under the Izod of London label and thereafter fatefully expanded to include clothing for men and children. In the 1950s, the IZOD and Lacoste brands came together to produce the well-known IZOD Lacoste label, establishing IZOD’s athletic roots and colorful persona. Now associated with the legendary French tennis player Renee Lacoste, a David Crystal executive began giving away the shirts to celebrities and athletic stars alike, including Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Bing Crosby. This gave the clothing line some great exposure.

Enter the rise of the preppy look, which reached its height in the 1980s. It was not only a look, it was a lifestyle. Students made the polo part of their everyday uniform and made it their own by layering colors and popping the collars. In the early 1990s, IZOD and Lacoste parted ways and in 1995, PVH purchased the IZOD brand and has been taking the brand to greater levels of success ever since.

In 1998, PVH launched its first new line under the IZOD brand – IZOD Club Corporate America – featuring a variety of apparel such as premium golf shirts, sweaters, fleecewear and twill pants & shorts. The performance sportswear line, IZOD PerformX, was introduced in 2001, as well as the innovative golf apparel line, IZOD XFG. Two years later, the interlocking IZ logo was launched and is still used today. The rest of the new decade saw a number of forward-thinking IZOD apparel lines, such as IZOD G (Golf), IZOD LX luxury sportswear line, IZOD Collegiate and the lightweight performance line, IZOD PFX Ratio. The brand is constantly reimagining colorful new ways to elevate the youthful, American aesthetic in today’s sportswear.

IZOD’s partnership with AAU Boys Basketball and the AJGA youth golfing initiative has helped to widen the brand’s audience through their focus on giving back to communities and moving social responsibility forward. A number of promotional partnerships, such as the IZOD IndyCar Series title sponsorship and sponsorships of the New York Giants and Team IZOD PGA stars Spencer Levin, 2012 U.S. Open Winner, Webb Simpson and two-time PGA Tour Winner, Scott Piercy has helped to raise the brand’s profile in the world of sports. As its presence in the golf space continues to grow, IZOD will see more activations in 2013. Look for the logo at the Maxim House at The Masters, Belk’s 125th Anniversary, St. Andrew’s 125th Anniversary and the AJGA Tournament.
